Our Process
-
Meet with our master jewellers and explore the possibilities. We look forward to hearing your ideas, getting to know a little more about you and/or a loved one.
We’ll discuss designs and conceptualise styles that are best-suited to you or your loved one. We offer expert advice regarding precious metals, any gemstones, diamonds, as well as timeframes, to get an overall idea of the individual brief. We’ll then source any precious materials and prepare pricing options for you to consider.
If you’re not able to make it in to meet with us, we offer virtual consultations via Zoom, or get things started with a phone call.
Consultation durationEngagement rings: 30-45 minutes, with up to an hour if you need.
Wedding rings: 30 minutes, with up to an hour if you need.
Other bespoke works: please get in touch and we can advise. -
You may already have an idea of potential gems that you’d like to include in your piece of jewellery, such as Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby as well as Diamonds, in different Colours and in classic and/or ‘fancy’ Cuts.
Our expert team are always acquiring beautiful new gems to add to our collection that can be viewed during your consultation. If we do not have a particular gemstone in stock, we’re able to extend our searches to a range of trusted suppliers around the world, so we have a great chance of finding exactly what you are looking for.
-
We move to the sketchpad to turn your ideas into reality. The Detailed Design process is the most crucial stage in the creation of your new piece of jewellery. Every design is unique and it can take time and imagination to get it right. As we carefully develop your piece of jewellery from the sketchpad, we like to have you involved as much as possible, so that the end piece is conceptualised with intention, for the individual, creating a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery that can be worn and enjoyed for a lifetime or more.
Once your Detailed Design is completed, you’ll have the opportunity to review and accept it. We will then brief our jewellers on your design and start the creation process!
-
Once you are 100% happy with your Detailed Design, we will brief our jewellers on all of the intricacies of your design and the specifics – our jewellers will start creating your new piece of jewellery!
Our master jewellers use the best of both modern and traditional jewellery-making techniques to produce a high durability, quality of construction that is finished to the highest standard possible. Every individual component is completely handmade, before we construct it with our laser welder.
The Rolling Mill is different in that we do not default to casting our finer pieces (with the exception of our heavier ‘Carved’ range), as we believe in the art of fine jewellery-making techniques that have been passed down from jeweller-to-jeweller over thousands of years. We are passionate about handmade jewellery-making techniques and have always wanted to remain true to the traditional craft, offering you the highest quality of manufacturing possible.
Our master jewellers use a variety of jewellery-making techniques; heating, rolling, hammering, filing, bending, twisting, sawing, punching etc, resulting in a high density, durable work-hardened quality that will last the test of time.
Completion times
Depending on the complexity of your design, the production turn-around is typically 4-10 weeks, however we recommend chatting with our team to negotiate an ideal completion date, this may be in time for your special occasion, an international flight (see our Duty Free section below), or simply the next possible opportunity.Summer season (August through to April) is our busiest time. Things tend to cool off over Winter and is a great time to get in touch to beat the rush and have something beautiful created ahead of the upcoming Summer season.
-
The most exciting stage is when you finally get to see your design come to fruition! We’ll be in touch to let you know when our jewellers have completed your piece of jewellery, we’ll invite you back to view and collect it. Alternatively we offer worldwide shipping.
Your jewellery comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that outlines all information regarding your new piece of jewellery, including the price paid and our GST Number. Also Warranty information and Care Instructions outlining all care and precaution instructions. We also include any gem/diamond reports or Independent Valuations. Then it’s time to celebrate and enjoy the moment, with your beautiful piece of jewellery for many years to come!
We want to ensure that your jewellery will last the test of time, we include free annual check and cleans for the lifetime of your purchase. This allows our jewellers to inspect your jewellery to make sure any gems are still nice and secure and in great condition.
Note: our Process is not set in stone – this is a general overview of the ideal steps and stages that tends to work well for our customers. If you have something a little different in mind, we are happy to try our best to accommodate, so you can execute your special plan in the best way possible. Take a moment to read our Google reviews to learn about the experiences our clients have had.
Other Services

Take advantage of the tax savings that can be made with our Duty Free service, if you’re planning an international trip.
Many of our customers have opted for Duty Free as an opportunity to propose, or even marry, at a beautiful international destination. Be with loved ones that may live overseas, or simply make the most of the savings, timed with an upcoming trip.
Duty Free is available to our customers that are travelling outside of New Zealand via Wellington and Auckland International Airports, for transactions over NZ$5,000.
Your Duty Free purchase can be a singular item, or a combined number of items on a single invoice, as long as they are all completed together and combined into one Duty Free collection. For example, it can be a great idea to complete your wedding set alongside an engagement ring to maximise your savings.
We invite our customers to meet with us to review their finished jewellery, to ensure it is absolutely perfect before it is sent to our Duty Free agents. Alternatively, if you’re not able to meet with us prior to your departure, we can send detailed photos and videos of your finished jewellery before it leaves us.
Important Information:
Duty Free is for purchases made for personal use only.
Jewellery must be collected by the account holder and intended wearer of the jewellery, purchases may not be collected by another individual on your behalf.
Duty Free is available for international departures only, if you forget to collect your purchase, you will not be able to collect it upon your return.

We hope you never need to make a claim on your precious piece of jewellery, however should you need to, please contact us and we can provide you with a replacement quote that you can then present to your insurance company.
The Rolling Mill has provided you with a world-class product, designed and created by our master jewellers, using the best jewellery-making techniques, to last the test of time. Ensure that you get this same high level of standard, service and product again when choosing to have your jewellery remade.
Sadly we are seeing more and more cases where insurance companies and companies they hire to assist with jewellery claims, forcing our customers to have their jewellery repaired or remade by the cheapest bidder. Please know that this will not be the same high quality, handmade manufacturing method and is not in your best interests.
Receiving your new piece of jewellery
Once your jewellery has been completed and you are ready to receive it from us - this is a great time to make sure you have the appropriate insurance cover in place. It’s a good idea to select a policy that:allows you to select a jeweller of your choice,
allows you to claim the full replacement value or indemnity value for each item of jewellery, should you ever need to have your jewellery repaired or remade.
We also recommend checking your Insurance Schedule under ‘Jewellery’ to ensure that there is sufficient cover available per item should you need to make a claim. Or the ability for you to specify individual pieces of jewellery.
Important note: we are noticing that, due to an increase in global Gold prices, customers with heavy Gold pieces may not be aware that their jewellery has increased significantly in value. Please feel free to get in touch should this be the case and we’ll be happy to prepare a replacement estimation, and if necessary, we can arrange an Independent Valuation for you (please see our section on Independent Valuations below).

It’s a great idea to consider having your new piece of jewellery Independently Valued, this will give you the full market value. While we hope you never have to make a claim, an Independent Valuation can be great to have for insurance purposes. We will be happy to arrange this for you, for all pieces valued at approximately NZ$1,000 (Incl. GST) and over. Please ask us about Valuations for more information. We recommend updating your Independent Valuation every 5 years as precious material and labour values can change.
